Microsoft Autofill was a password manager developed by Microsoft for Android and iOS,[citation needed] released on February 5, 2021.[1] It was a part of Microsoft Authenticator until 2024.[2] It stored users' passwords under their Microsoft accounts. It could import passwords from Chrome and some popular password managers or from a CSV file.[3] In the Microsoft Authenticator app, Autofill required multi-factor authentication to sign in, which provided an additional layer of security. The passwords were encrypted both on the device and in the cloud.
Features
- Multi-factor authentication (through the Microsoft Authenticator mobile app)
- Import from competitors
- Export to CSV file
- Save credit card information
Security
The Microsoft Authenticator app requires a biometric or device passcode as extra security. The passwords on the device are encrypted, and encryption/decryption keys are not stored and are always generated when needed. Passwords are decrypted only when a user wants to see the password or when the password is filled out automatically. Passwords are synced over an SSL-protected HTTPS connection.
Discontinuation
The autofill feature of Microsoft Authenticator was discontinued in August 2025.[2]
